My current occupation is illustration. At the end of 2001 I left a position as Creative Director with a Kansas City based graphic design firm to pursue illustration full time. I'd been free-lancing as an illustrator with that goal in mind for two years. As of January 1st, Ryan Etter Illustration was official.
I found my true calling with the computer as a creative tool and was all too happy to give up brushes and tubes of paint. Like most artists, I still sketch and rough out concepts with pencil and paper. There is a sense of emotion and action that I get by sketching. I spend a lot of time trying to maintain the integrity of sketches so as not to lose that emotion in the final illustration. I look for a balance between my traditional and digital skills so that the imagery becomes the focus rather than the image.
Being a new studio, I'm looking forward to building a broad client base. Finding markets that suit my style and creating good relationships within those markets has been very fulfilling. Ultimately I'd like to follow in the footsteps of Fred Gambino, John Berkey and James Gurney who have worked within the industry without boundaries...from publishing and advertising to film and entertainment.
