A few words about the artist insight
Hello, the subject of science fiction and to a lesser degree fantasy, has always held a special place in my thoughts, because I truly believe that we as a species hold a special place in the whole cosmic big picture. The opportunities that science fiction artists have in their creative minds, to help enlighten humanities understanding of where we fit in the cosmic big picture are immense. I see science fiction art as individual windows or looking glasses to see into the past, present, or future activities of both ourselves and a multitude of other life. I hold a very optimistic view of our future but, I also believe that we have to be very cautious in our endeavourers to reach out to the universe, for I think that life in the cosmos can be as diverse as the collective imaginations of all of humanities artist. Life in the cosmos could be as brutal as depicted by the artwork of Boris Verdelho (most excellent artwork) or as exciting as the art of Tim White or as haunting and beautiful as Geoff Taylor. It is well known that Hydrogen is the most abundant energy source in the universe and that any likely contact with a alien species will most likely be a carbon based biped, with each sentient species having their own perculiar adaptations to suit their particular environments. With that in mind, science fiction art is open to a universe of ideas, thoughts, imagination, and creativity. Science fiction artist and writers are fundamental in shaping humanities views and pre conceived ideas of were we are at in the big picture. Remember that science fiction artist imaginations and to a further extent the human mind created such imagery as seen in the Star Wars films or the Aliens Saga. Fifth Element and Independence Day come to mind as examples of science fiction scenarios that are very plausible.
Most of my work is done in oils in my spare bedroom that has been transformed into a studio. I like to use oils and brushes as I believe that I can get a better result with colour, highlights, depth, and texture. The most satisfying paint that I find is Graduate Oils. It's a very good paint to use. I also feel that the craft of using brushes as a tool (with the advent of computers) is slowly disappearing from human culture and I try to do my bit to keep the craft going. I'm a bit of an enigma because I thrive on science fiction with the inherent implications of advanced technologies, yet I'm a bit of a traditionalist because I like to use brushes instead of a computer. I do not pretend to be one of the big boys in town when it comes to artistic abilities, but I certainly share their enthusiasm when it comes to the subject of science fiction and fantasy. I try to be realistic in my work and I know I still have a long way to go. My focus and love for the immense dimensions of the subject of science fiction will continue to inspire me to create more and better works. It is my small contribution to the fulfillment of humanities greatest challenge ever, and that is to travel to the stars. Kind regards.
