After trying my luck with a couple non-art related avenues, I've come to realize my true lifelong interest, which is drawing and painting mages, dragons, and monsters. For the past 3 months, I have been drowning myself in my artwork, finally building a portfolio of fantasy.

Technique:
I always start developing the concept with thumbnail drawings about 3" x 4". Once I decide on a composition, I do more detailed sketches of the main elements of the idea.I then take these sketches and develop a detailed drawing at about the actual size of the painting. By the time I get to the painting, I already have details and values completely worked out.

I then take the drawing to Kinko's and get a copy at the exact size of the painting support(either canvas or masonite board) . On the back of the copied drawing, I smear powdered graphite, and then transfer it to the gessoed support. I am then ready to paint in oils.

My technique begins by painting with thin passages of raw umber diluted with turp to establish values. Next, I get an underpainting going with Liquin, since it dries the thicker paint very quickly. When dry, I cover an area with stand oil and turp (to bring back the wet oil color look), and then proceed to paint into the area with paint and Liquin. I repeat this step as many times as needed, adding a greater proportion of stand oil to the turp layer by layer. I finish with a layer of Retouch varnish to bring back the gloss.
